Okay, the title is a little strong. Fight Like Apes releasing Something Global in Tower Records. It's pretty much a consensus opinion from people I've talked to that the single is bad and sounds like sickly polished pop-punk. It sounds like that live too. Even their good songs (including the one that contains the line this blog is named after) are losing edge and gaining polish. I really, really, really did not want to be sitting here saying "I liked their early stuff" before the album even came out. But it's hard not to.
Their best songs have been the same ones since way back when. Jake Summers and Lend Me Your Face. They're still good, but the bite's not there any more. It used to seem like May Kay was going to climb off the stage, grab your skull, put a foot on the wall for leverage and rip your face off whether or not you wanted her to. It's not like that any more.
Without the roughshod, grinning lunatic side, they're just another band. Just another Hooray For Humans. That minute change in mood makes the kitschness and the pop culture pillaging seem more contrived than inspired.
I assume the album's going to sound like Something Global, production-wise, and have the boring songs (i.e. anything not on the first EP or some of the second EP) on it. There's still a chance they could write 10 great songs in the next year or so and come out with a good second album, because all the things that made them so good are still hanging around somewhere underneath the Mr. Muscle approach. But as it stands, I don't know. I'm really sad about making this post. But whatever.
Grand Pocket Orchestra, you're up.

I think the b-side is rather good. Was in fact thinking about blogging about it but I wasn't sure if it'd be cool for me to stick it up.
I've heard the album version of Lend Me Your Face and it's a lot more polished and for the most part not as good as the original version. Particularly unenamoured with the multitracking of May Kay's vocals. On the other hand the breakdown on it is great.
I find it hard to know whether I really agree or disagree with you on this. It's such a cliched state to find oneself in, preferring a band's early/lo-fi/punk rock stuff; but I think it's equally cliched that if their more polished sound turns out to be more people-friendly, then some of them at least will go back to the older stuff and that can only be a good thing.
I haven't bought the single yet, although I've listened to all the songs many times on their myspace etc. If Ian is talking about 'Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues', I think that's 100% excellent - and as a cover of a wholly unpolished song - which shows how their new sound can work.
But otherwise, I am put off by the production, and to a lesser extent the songwriting. Pocket's vocals are particularly strange now.
Well done for saying what sometimes needs to be said, and with a very reasonable approach - strong title aside, which makes it sound very Mcluskyish.

"Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues", that's the one.
But learning that it's a cover saddens me a little as I thought that if they'd dropped something so good from the album it had to be a good sign for it.
dont worry. the album is good. ive heard it : )
Karl, I missed you at Calvin Johnson. I can only assume you are not in Ireland? I'm mates with FLapes so it's hard for me to get all objective about new album stuff. But I would agree about new version of 'lend me your face'. I prefer the older version. MayKay is definitely better when she is more unhinged. Good post dude. Hope you are enjoying your holiday if you are on one.
Fight like Apes - just a band.
It used to seem like May Kay was going to climb off the stage, grab your skull, put a foot on the wall for leverage and rip your face off whether or not you wanted her to.
She never has suggested that to me.
The album is brilliant. The different version of Jake Summers is fantastic.
This post is blog backlash 101. You haven't even heard the album yet for godssake!
I just review gigs, man. Album could be incredible, but this blog post would still be what I thought of that particular gig.
It may seem like I jumped to a wild conclusion, and gave it a sensationalist title... and that is what happened. But still. I stand by my right to represent a part of the discourse.
You never got a slightly crazed Pixies-ish vibe off them? You don't hear any change to that?
"crazed Pixies-ish vibe" = Mclusky. And I think it is less obvious now.
I'm not as sold on the Mclusky comparison as a lot of people. They cover them, and they listen to them, but there's a lot of difference.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
